Eleven construction contractors working on a project at 100 Morton Street in Manhattan have been cited for alleged serious and repeated safety violations by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Compliance officers from the agency's Manhattan office inspected the job site as part of a "local emphasis program" in the New York City area aimed at eliminating fall hazards in the construction industry. They found workers at the site were exposed to a variety of hazards, including unguarded wall and floor openings; unguarded stair wells, building sides and roof edges; uncovered floor holes; lack of personal protective equipment and hazard communications training; electrical hazards; and unsafe ladders and scaffolding.

"It's fortunate that no workers were killed on this construction site," said Richard Mendelson, OSHA's area director in Manhattan. "Left uncorrected, the hazards we found could easily lead to tragedy."

A serious citation is issued when death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew, or should have known. A repeat violation occurs when a company has been cited for similar violations within the past three years and the citation has become a final order.
