Fire
hits 9 story historic building in DC
By Alan Etter
Just before 10:00
PM 1/29, units responded for the report of fire coming from the former
Woodward & Lothrop building, 10th & G Streets, NW.
Engine 16 arrived
to heavy fire showing from the 10th St. side. As firefighters began
an interior attack, Operations 6 called for a second alarm. Fire
was evident in a debris chute that ran vertically through the interior
of the historic nine-story building.
After an aggressive
20-minute attack, the bulk of the fire was knocked down and was under control
with a half hour. There were no injuries. Authorities now say the
cause of the fire is accidental. A baseboard space heater appears
to be the source of ignition.
