Units responded with the Second Battalion
Chief at approximately 3:30 PM on March 19th for the apartment house in
the 1200 block of Delaware Ave., SW near the DC Waterfront. First
arriving firefighters found smoke and fire showing from the top floor of
a three story brick condominium complex.
Mounting an aggressive interior operation,
all visible fire was knocked down within 20 minutes. Witnesses said an
elderly woman was in the apartment at the time of the fire and was rescued
by a neighbor who reached across the balcony and pulled her to safety.
The 88-year-old woman was examined by EMS on the scene and transported
to a local hospital for observation. The cause of the fire has not
been determined.
