Fatal fire in Wilmington DE

In  Wilmington, Delaware on Sunday, 7 March,  the Wilmington Fire Department units were dispatched to the above location in answer to a report from the neighbors that there was smoke coming from a second floor window. 

First arriving Battalion Chief William McKim reported smoke showing from the second floor of a two story, frame, duplex style house. 

The firefighters forced entry into the house, advanced a hose line to the second floor and located the fire in the front bedroom. As they entered the bedroom, they discovered the body of an elderly woman on the floor at the foot of the bed.


The victim was removed via the stairs, at 13:48 hours, and turned over to EMS personnel and Paramedics. Treatment was initiated at the scene, and the victim was transported to the Wilmington Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 1355 hours.

Firefighters reported that when they entered the residence, the smoke detectors were sounding. 21 firefighters brought the fire under control at 1358 hours. 

There were no other injuries to civilians or firefighters at this fire. 

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Wilmington Fire Department Fire marshal’s Office.
