        About the department.......
SFD currently responds out of 11 stations. 12 will be running by October, 2001 and 13 and 14 are planned in 2-5 years. The department's 2002 budget will be approximately 12 million dollars.

In 2000, SFD responded 4475 incidents. The department is first responder trained but as of yet have not started running any medical calls.

We have a large number of low income residents living in 100+ year old buildings that are tightly packed into our historic district resulting in a heavy fire load.

Savannah recently annexed two separate large parcels of land that will allow for our expansion and consolidation with the county.

SFD's firefighter are proudly represented by the IAFF Local 574, with a 91% membership rate.

During the last 3 years and for several years to come we will be experiencing a HUGE turnover of personnel. The department will have 263 personnel as of January 2002.

The department has hired "lateral-entry" personnel for other areas to help offset this loss of experience.

The City of Savannah covers approximately 70 square miles and serves nearly 135,000 residents with an additional 4,000,000+ visitors yearly.
